The people who assess you

Our medical examiners

Aviation medical assessments are carried out by appropriately certificated doctors. Here is what that means, and the standards our examiners work to.

The basics

What is an Aeromedical Examiner?

Aviation medicals are carried out by doctors with specific CAA certification, and not every GP can perform them.

An Aeromedical Examiner (AME) is a doctor who has been certificated by the UK Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) to carry out aviation medical assessments. An AME examines applicants against the standards set out in UK Part-MED and, within the scope of their certification, issues, revalidates or renews medical certificates.

Because flight safety depends on these assessments, the CAA controls who may perform them and where certain examinations may take place. That is why it helps to understand the different roles involved.

Know the difference

AeMC, AME and OHMP

Three terms you will come across, and what each one can do under UK CAA rules.

AeMC

An Aeromedical Centre is a CAA-approved centre that carries out the full range of assessments, including initial Class 1 and initial Class 3 examinations.

AME

An Aeromedical Examiner is a CAA-certificated doctor who carries out examinations according to their certification, typically Class 2 and LAPL, and where certificated, Class 1 and Class 3 revalidation and renewal.

OHMP

An Occupational Health Medical Practitioner may carry out cabin crew medical assessments where approved by the CAA to do so.

Where initial Class 1 and Class 3 take place

Under UK CAA rules, an initial Class 1 or initial Class 3 medical must be carried out at an AeMC. Subsequent revalidations and renewals may be completed by an AME certificated for that class. See our services overview for how this applies to each certificate.

How it works

How an assessment is arranged

Whichever examination you need, the route is the same: get in touch, and we will guide you to the right assessment.

The examination you need depends on the licence or role you hold. A Class 2 or LAPL assessment is carried out by an AME, while an initial Class 1 or initial Class 3 must take place at an AeMC, with later revalidations and renewals carried out by an AME certificated for that class. Cabin crew medical reports are carried out by a CAA-approved AME or OHMP.

If you are not sure which examination applies to you, or where it needs to be carried out, email us at [email protected] and we will help you work out the right next step.

How we work

The standards our examiners work to

Whatever examination you come in for, you can expect the same professional approach.

CAA certification

Aeromedical Examiners are doctors certificated by the UK CAA to carry out aviation medical assessments within the scope of their certification.

Standards-led

Assessments follow UK Part-MED standards. The examination is an independent, professional judgement made to protect flight safety.

Respectful care

A considered, patient-focused manner. You are given time, clarity and the chance to ask questions.

Confidentiality

Your medical information is handled sensitively and in line with professional and data protection obligations.

Checking an examiner's certification

The CAA maintains information on authorised Aeromedical Centres and certificated Aeromedical Examiners. You can confirm an examiner's or centre's current status with the UK CAA. To arrange an assessment, see our booking page or get in touch.
